An Update From The Surfside Beach Marathon

The Overnite Software Surfside Beach Marathon and Half Marathon is hosted by one of HARRA's affiliated clubs, the Brazosport Area Road Runners Association (BARRA).

Here's an update from race director Daryl Beatty:

"Yikes! It was Ike! If you haven't noticed the news the past two weeks, Surfside Beach suffered a pretty substantial hit from Hurricane Ike. Lots of houses and businesses were destroyed, and our usual race headquarters, Stahlman Park, was substantially damaged. I was just about to send out my annual "We made it through hurricane season e-mail" and then ...

"But, the beach is still here, it just moved back a little ways, and if you are in for an adventure we are still on for the 5th running of the Surfside Beach Marathon & Half Marathon, on February 14th, 2009. As with each year, but more importantly this year, the proceeds will benefit the "Save Our Beach Association" Surfside, and offer college scholarships.

"To the many of you who are already registered (registration is running way ahead of last year), we will be sending out some changes as the date approaches. For example, we will probably be using large tents this year rather than Stahlman park pavillion, so we will have packet pickup at a nearby location. More on that later, as we see how clean up progresses.

"If you haven't registered yet, we are continuing the early registration rate of $50 for the next 100 registrants.

"You may register by going to the web site: www.surfsidemarathon.com.

"Every year at Surfside Beach is unique! This one will certainly be no exception. We have another in our continuing series of unique awards and apparel items planned for this year, and look forward to seeing you then."
