The Woodlands Running Club Hosts Open Race 5K Friday

Didn't get enough cross country running last Saturday during the HARRA Cross Country Relay sponsored by the Tornados?

Gather up as many of your club's members as you can and head north to The Woodlands for the Nike South Invitational Meet Open 5K and Running Club Team Challenge Friday evening, October 3 at 7:00 p.m.

Located at Bear Branch Sports Park, 6101 Research Forest Drive in The Woodlands, Nike South is one of the top high school cross country meets in the Southwest.

The 5K is the same multi-loop course that the high school boys run on Saturday morning.

Post-entry begins at 5:30 p.m., while the middle school races are going on, and the entry fee is just $10. All proceeds benefit The Woodlands Running Club Scholarship Fund.

Awards will be given to the top men's team, the top women's team, the team with the most participants and the top 25 individual performances. Clubs will be scored using cross country scoring for their first five (5) finishers. In the event of a tie, the sixth runner will be used.

Limited parking is available at the meet site and at Faith Community Church located next to the course. Additional parking at Lonestar College Administration Building, which is located on the north side of Research Forest Drive (at the intersection of Shadowbend Drive) and is about a 2-block walk west to the course.

Three Seconds From First!

The team of Jose Lara, Vaughn Gibbs, Ray Caesar Martinez and Luis Armenteros came up just three seconds short of victory at Saturday's HARRA Cross Country Relay; however, they chipped away at a 30-second lead set down on the first lap of 10:05 by Gabriel Rodriguez.

But Armenteros couldn't hold off the stronger finishing charge in the sand by former Sam Houston State star Joe Amburn even though the former Rice Owl started his 2-mile lap five seconds down.

HARRA Cross Country Relay Open Winners

Gabriel Rodriguez, Joe Amburn, Joe Oveido and Abe Zavala posted an eight-mile time of 42:25 as they held off a Luis Armenteros-led team by just three (3) seconds to capture Saturday's HARRA Cross Country Relay, hosted by the Tornados Running Club.

We couldn't get these ladies to stay still long enough for a team picture, but another Tornados team captured the women's open division of the HARRA Cross Country Relay. HARRA VP, Road Race Management Jen Brown (with her back to you), Michelle Friedman and Lea Carruthers paced their team with a winning time of 50:51. Diana Hurst (not pictured) ran the team's fastest leg - the second leg - in 12:30.

An Update From The Surfside Beach Marathon

The Overnite Software Surfside Beach Marathon and Half Marathon is hosted by one of HARRA's affiliated clubs, the Brazosport Area Road Runners Association (BARRA).

Here's an update from race director Daryl Beatty:

"Yikes! It was Ike! If you haven't noticed the news the past two weeks, Surfside Beach suffered a pretty substantial hit from Hurricane Ike. Lots of houses and businesses were destroyed, and our usual race headquarters, Stahlman Park, was substantially damaged. I was just about to send out my annual "We made it through hurricane season e-mail" and then ...

"But, the beach is still here, it just moved back a little ways, and if you are in for an adventure we are still on for the 5th running of the Surfside Beach Marathon & Half Marathon, on February 14th, 2009. As with each year, but more importantly this year, the proceeds will benefit the "Save Our Beach Association" Surfside, and offer college scholarships.

"To the many of you who are already registered (registration is running way ahead of last year), we will be sending out some changes as the date approaches. For example, we will probably be using large tents this year rather than Stahlman park pavillion, so we will have packet pickup at a nearby location. More on that later, as we see how clean up progresses.

"If you haven't registered yet, we are continuing the early registration rate of $50 for the next 100 registrants.

"You may register by going to the web site: www.surfsidemarathon.com.

"Every year at Surfside Beach is unique! This one will certainly be no exception. We have another in our continuing series of unique awards and apparel items planned for this year, and look forward to seeing you then."

Update from Finish Line Sports

HARRA-affiliated club and member discount program participant Finish Line Sports' Andy Stewart provides the following update this morning:

"I hope everyone is okay and safe after terrible Hurricane Ike. It was quite a weekend! We all feel for Galveston.

"Finish Line Sports is okay, unboarded, and back open 10-5 this week. The race equipment boat shed on Dairy Ashford was completely leveled. I am dealing with that. Ugh. Thanks to all the running friends that helped with that mess Monday night.

"AMICA Try Andy's Tri is a GO for Sunday, October 12, as planned. 850 entered and full.

"Dave Rainey asked that I tell you that Cinco Ranch Tri has been moved back a month to Sunday, October 26. Race is full at 850. Please spread the word.

"FLS Beginners Speedwork will start next Wednesday night, Sept 24, as planned at Clements.

"Markell Lacy's swim talk and FLS First-Timers Tri Clinic has been moved to this Saturday, Sept 20. Markell at 8 a.m. and the Newcomers Tri Clinic at 10 a.m.

"Any questions, the store phone is working at 281-242-7700."

Power In Motion Still On September 17th!

The second week of the Fall session of Power In Motion will be held at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday evening, September 17, in Memorial Park -- just to spite Ike!

If you're able to make it to the Park this evening to participate, please do so safely.

"I made it down to Memorial Park yesterday," said Rita, a member of the Gu's, in the Power In Motion forums. "There are quite a few trees down, but the park is open and they have done a great job of clearing the path."

Former PIM co-director Tom Radosevich ran the Park this morning and reported via e-mail that he was "sad to see too many downed giants."

The HARRA Board and the leadership of Power In Motion hopes that all runners have power, water and have come through the storm with little damage.
