Recorded by Hope Clark
Monday, August 20, 2001
In attendance: Joe Sellers, Ralph Collins, Tom McBrayer, Annie Hadow, Randy Carlson, Bill Dubinsky, Rosemary Franklin, Mercedes Tarley, Tom Woltz, Sr., Felix G. Lugo, John Phillips, Jeremy Mills.
Meeting called to order by the President, Joe Sellers. He then asked for the various committee reports, after first reading an e-mail report on the Kid's Run from Ram Tekumalla (not present), Director of the Kid's Run Program. Highlights are as follows:
Kid's Run - Ram Tekumalla (not present)
The Kid's Run entry forms and posters have arrived. They are at Memorial Park, Luke's Locker and RunSport. Will also distribute to committee members. T-shirts are almost ready.
We have a $500 voucher from HEB. Randall's will donate bananas. Looking for more race-packet goodies. Contacted the Spring Branch ISD and trying to reach Katy ISD. We have EMT and ambulance confirmed. MHCH trying to get a paramedic on bicycle for race.
Have two mascots from MHCH and the Aeros.
Treasurer - Jeremy Mills
Received new checks in the mail and mailed out checks to people that have turned in receipts. There is money in the account. For full accounting, see Treasurer's report.
Road Race Management - Randy Carlson
Sent camera-ready logo for park loop to the Parks Department. They will get an estimate for the installation of the markers with our logo on it. Markers will be 12x12 flat stones for each mile, with a 6x6 stone for ¼ mile increments. The markers will be placed going in both directions.
AED - Talked with Sgt. Marsala about having an AED unit in their vehicle or one in the park and he thinks it is a great idea. Will talk with the Captain concerning the call boxes.
Reliant Energy runs the lights at Memorial Park. The Parks Dept. has turned in requests to repair the non-working lights on the East side of the loop. Will contact Jerry Smith about sending an email to the run list about the person/department you need to call requesting that lights be repaired on the Memorial Park loop. The light pole number needs to be included with the request. With more people calling the Parks Dept. about lights that are out, it should cause the repair service to be more prompt.
Communication - Tom Woltz
Newsletter should be out the first or second week of September. Next issue deadline will be October 12th.
PIM - Ralph Collins
PIM will start September 5th at Memorial Park. Would like at least a couple of Board members to show up at meeting.AED & Student's Run - Bill Dubinsky
Talked about Pike's Peak article. Has a video available. He would like a HARRA group to go to Pike's Peak.
AED - Have to have a physician in charge of the program and to maintain the AED units. Stated that Bob Hoakman is adjusting his schedule to be in town for the Fall race calendar and he will discuss the program with him.
Volunteer Committee - Felix Lugo/Mercedes Tarley
Mercedes stated that Bob Gulliver is part of the Volunteer Committee, along with Rosemary Franklin and herself.
We will make sure the HARRA tent and set-up equipment is taken care of for the marathon signup on September 10th from 5-7 p.m. Tom McBrayer stated that he would get the equipment to the park. Trying to get volunteers for HARRA tent during the marathon signup at the park.
Felix Lugo will be the responsible person for events that need the HARRA tent and equipment.
"Out of the Darkness" Run
Joe Sellers presented the following request. The City of Houston and the Houston Parks Department would like a discount on renting HARRA equipment, which may help HARRA on future projects.
Motion #1
Annie Hadow made a motion to give "Out of the Darkness" race a rental discount on HARRA equipment. Randy Carlson seconded the motion. Motion passed with 9 votes.
Competition - John Phillips
John Phillips presented to the Board a request that the Derby Dash date be changed from February 2, 2002 to March 2, 2002. BCRR requested that Road Race Management accept this date change.
Technical/Equipment - Tom McBrayer
Tom presented to the Board a request from the "Race For The Cure" representatives. They want to rent 100 stanchions from HARRA for their race. We currently have 50-60 stanchions, which means we will have to build and store 40 more stanchions. They want to pay over a 2-year period or 3 equal payments and have HARRA donate one-third of the cost.
Motion #2
Joe Sellers made a motion that HARRA approve the plan, as presented by Tom McBrayer for the "Race For The Cure." Motion seconded by Tom Woltz. Seven votes carried the proposal.
Membership - Annie Hadow
We are down 10-20% on membership. Fifty percent of the members sign up during the marathon season.
Need someone to take over the HARRA hot line. Elizabeth Bearman's name was suggested.
Joe Sellers then presented a recommendation to have the membership sign-up date changed to September in order to cover the Fall racing season. After a thorough discussion by the Board, a proposal was made.
Motion #3
Jeremy Mills made a motion that starting now, everyone who signs up for HARRA membership will have membership through June 30, 2002. All new and renewing members will pay the full rate. No pro-rates plan. Everyone who is a current member will be grandfathered through June 30, 2002. All HARRA memberships will begin July 1st. Motion seconded by Tom Wolz. Unanimous vote carried the motion.
