Harra Meeting Minutes
May 15, 2006

Attendees:  Tom Stilwell, Randy Carlson, Roger Boak, Joann Luco, Audrey Christiansen, Tom McBrayer, Anna Sumrall Helm, Erin Foley, Bruce Mansur, Eddie Rodriguez, Peter Tyler, Brett Woody, Scott Michelman

Memorial Park Conservancy:  Peter Tyler made a presentation concerning the extension of the trails past and around the running track at Memorial Park.  The current plan is to run the trail between the track and the road.  No other space or solution has been found for the trail.  Board members will go look at this proposal to see if it appears feasible and will provide feedback to the Conservancy regarding this plan.

Additionally the Conservancy is seeking a $106,000 grant from the Texas Parks & Wildlife Department for the expansion and maintenance of trails around the “outer loop” of the lands that form Memorial Park.  The grant requires $5,000 in local funding to be guaranteed by a local sponsor, and Harra approved a proposal to provide a guarantee of $5,000 to the Conservancy for this purpose.  The money will be taken from Harra’s general trail fund should the Conservancy be successful in obtaining the grant.

HARRA Banquet:  Anna Helm and Darlene Miller scoured available locations and narrowed the banquet choices to two:  Luisitos and St. Arnolds Brewery.  The board voted to hold the banquet on Saturday, June 17, 2006 at St. Arnolds Brewery.  The event will be catered and HARRA is arranging to have Jeff Galloway speak about his early running career, including being present at the 1972 Olympics.  Cost for HARRA members will be $15.00 if the sign up on the website (to be set up by Tom), and $20.00 at the door.  Kids will be charged $10 to cover food costs.  Roger Boak will put together a slide show from pictures submitted by the clubs and race directors, while Tom will provide the projector and screen.  Clubs will be encouraged to bring and hang their club banners for decoration.

Club Competition Plaques:  HARRA will create new plaques for the club competition and voted not to try to retrace history on the plaques.  Rather HARRA will start the new plaques with the results of the Spring 2006 competition.

Officer Nominations for 2006-07:  Anna Sumrall Helm is running for president; Roger Boak is running for VP of Clubs; Stephen Mayor is running for VP of Road Race Management; Audrey Christiansen is running for Treasurer; Erin Foley is running for Membership; Jo Ann Luco is running for an At-Large Position; and Bruce Mansur is running for an At-Large Position.  Additional people may have submitted their nominations by email to Bill Crich, so a full and final slate will be announced on May 16, 2006 after checking with Bill.

Spring Series Races:  On behalf of the board, Bill Crich and Bruce Mansur board polled the current Spring Series Races and worked with them to establish dates for the Spring 2007.  The following races have been proposed for the series:

§                 2/3/07 – Buffalo Wallow

§                 2/10/07 – Park to Park Run

§                 3/10/07 – Bayou City Classic

§                 3/24/07 – Law Week 8k

§                 4/7/07 – Bellaire Trolley Run

§                 4/18/07 ?? LP Run (date to be confirmed with St. Thomas)

§                 4/28/07 ?? Bayou Bash Relay (date to be confirmed with Fluor Daniels)

The 2006-07 board will approve this line up when it is finalized.

Just for Kids Run:  The Houston Running Bloggers have taken over the directorship of the Just for Kids Run.  They have already established a website and have walked through the site.  The club is very excited about the event and is generating new ideas including a t-shirt design contest.  This looks to be an excellent transition for the JFK run.

Club Competition & ROTS:  Roger is still working to finalize the results.  Geoff has quickly posted a prior version of the results that is 99% accurate, but an updated results list needs to be substituted.

Tour De Bayou:  The Tour was held successfully again this year and Roger reported a slight growth in numbers.  The Tour had 181 avg. finishers per stage, and 64 finishers who ran every stage.  There were 318 total different runners throughout the stages.  Everyone seemed to enjoy the stages and the event looks to be going strong.

Power in Motion:  PIM held its last session on May 10 with great attendance and a lot of fan fare.  After the run in the Ho Chi Minh trails, the runners and coaches went to Jacks Grill and watched a slide show of pictures from the various training dates.  The PIM website has posted a voluntary summer program and planning is in the works to host an even larger program in the fall.  Jack McClintic and all of the coaches did a fantastic job organizing and directing this program this year.

Bayou Bash Relay:  Unfortunately the Bayou Bash Relay was rained out during the event.  The directors were getting up to the minute weather from Channel 11, but when lightning moved towards the event, the directors had to cancel the event.

Membership:  HARRA has 1716 members, with 267 who have renewed for 2006-2007.

Treasury:  HARRA will likely have a small surplus at the end of the 2005-2006 board year.
