> Bob Hoekman, M.D. (aka Dr. Bob)

I have served as the HARRA Medical Advisor/Director since 1999. This is a non-voting position on the HARRA Board of Directors but that does not prevent me from being very vocal and active on our board. :-)

I bear the burden of doing the best we can to assure runner safety during HARRA sponsored events. I believe we do this quite well.

I provide AHA training classes in CPR and AED (new or renewal) for members of the team each spring and fall. The classes last about four hours and are held at my home next to Memorial Park. I guarantee that if you participate, you will learn something valuable, have fun and enjoy Star Pizza.

I maintain the equipment and usually deliver it to the race. I organize the volunteer teams for each race and, if I am not working, appoint a team leader for that event.

I no longer see or treat patients but am happy to commiserate about your injury and can give you advice that cures most injuries (rest a bit).

I did Orthopedic Surgery in Houston for nearly 30 years before retiring from clinical practice in 2001. My time is now split between Houston and the North Cascades of northern Washington, and I am in Houston only during the Spring and Fall HARRA seasons.  Yes, I was born before WW II but we old guys still run, just a bit slower.

Since I travel a lot (I do love running in the mountains!), it is easiest to reach me by email at rhoekman@mac.com.
